Crowdfunding is exciting because you get in early. But “early” also means “risk.” The best backers aren’t just optimistic—they’re informed.
This is a practical due diligence guide you can use before backing a Kickstarter or Indiegogo campaign.
Step 1: Read the campaign like an investor, not a shopper
Ask:
– What problem does this solve?
– Is the solution realistic?
– What could go wrong?
Step 2: Verify the product is real
Look for:
– Prototype videos with continuous shots
– Real-world usage (not studio-only)
– Evidence of iteration (older prototypes, testing clips)
Step 3: Evaluate the team
A credible team usually shows:
– Names and roles
– Relevant experience
– A willingness to be accountable
Step 4: Pressure-test the timeline
Hardware timelines are commonly underestimated. If the product includes electronics, batteries, apps, or custom tooling, expect longer lead times.
Step 5: Check the budget logic
You won’t see full financials, but you can still ask:
– Does the pricing make sense?
– Are they undercharging for shipping?
– Are stretch goals adding expensive complexity?
Step 6: Read the comments like a detective
Comments reveal what the campaign page hides:
– Repeated questions
– Unanswered concerns
– Creator tone under pressure
Step 7: Review updates (and off-platform behavior)
If the creator has a history, you can learn a lot:
– Do they update consistently?
– Do they share real progress?
– Do they own mistakes?
Step 8: Decide your “risk budget”
A smart backer knows their limit:
– How much can you afford to lose?
– Are you okay waiting longer than promised?
– Is this a “fun gamble” or a “must-have” purchase?
A simple scoring method
Give each category a 1–5 score:
– Prototype proof
– Team credibility
– Manufacturing readiness
– Communication quality
– Timeline realism
If you can’t score it, you don’t know it.
